The following is a brief interview with Peter Frank, the man behind the Propane GasGenie®.
As in introduction to the Propane GasGenie® we have a few questions.
Q: Where do you live and what do you invent?
A: I live in Cricklewood, North London and I event devices mostly to do with intelligent monitoring.
Q: Did you study to become an inventor?
A: I studied mathematics and physics and graduated from Sussex University and then did an MA in Mathematics at the University of Berkeley California. These days you can study to be an inventor, well ‘New Product Development.’ Something I’ve lectured on at Imperial College London.
Q: Can you name something you’ve invented that you are proud of?
A: The FIREFLY is a ‘man down’ alarm that has been developed for fire services around the world. It emits an alarm when a firefighter fails to move for a certain length of time.
Q: Tell us how you came to invent the Propane GasGenie®.
A: It intrigued me that there were no gas level monitors on the market that didn’t require fitting to the actual gas. I thought it possible to monitor a gas supply from the outside of the tank.
Q: What is the secret behind your propane gas gauge?
A: Well the GasGenie is not really a gauge as such. It works on a different technical principle to the pressure sensor type. It uses a combination of temperature of the cylinder wall and time to detect the low gas condition.
Q: Is your invention patented?
A: Yes it is.
Q: Has the GasGenie been tested independently?
A: Yes it has by two different organisations.
Q: Why are you selling the product through Amazon and not through a grill or propane gas related retailer?
A: It’s a bit of a ‘chicken and egg’ situation. There is a lot of interest in the product from BBQ retailers for example but they want to see a track record of sales before investing.
Q: So you’re selling the GasGenie through your website?
A: No. We’re using amazon.com for the sales. It’s easy to set up and most potential customers will have an Amazon account.
Q: What is the price?
A: Currently, we have an introduction offer of $19.99*
Q: What potential is there, do you think, for the Propane GasGenie® in the United States?
A: Well we know from the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association that around 86% of American families have a grill and that 63% of those are liquid propane, so let’s say around forty-five million grills need a Propane GasGenie®!
Q: Thank you very much for talking to us.
A: Thank you.
